What is our purely cremation package/direct cremation?

At A.J. Sellman, we offer a purely cremation package, also known as direct cremation. This involves us taking your loved one directly to the crematorium with no formal ceremony. Normally no family or friends are present – though this is optional.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Direct Cremation

We understand that not knowing what happens next can feel overwhelming. This simple guide is here to gently walk you through each step, so you feel reassured, informed, and supported throughout.

  1. Your loved one is brought into our care
As soon as you notify us, our local, family-run team will bring your loved one into our care. They will remain with us at all times, close to home, treated with dignity and respect.
  2. Gentle guidance from the very beginning
We will guide you through what needs to be done next, including how to register the death. You can speak with us face to face or over the phone—whatever feels most comfortable for you.
  3. Making the arrangements together
We will arrange to meet in person, giving you time and space to talk everything through. We’ll explain each step clearly and answer any questions you may have. If you wish, you can also include personal touches, such as choosing music, arranging flowers, or spending time in the Chapel of Rest.
  4. Keeping you informed
We will let you know when the cremation will take place, so you feel reassured and aware of what is happening at every stage.
  5. Returning your loved one’s ashes
Following the cremation, we will collect the ashes and bring them back into our care, where they will remain safe until you are ready.
  6. Support when you are ready
There is no rush to make decisions. When the time feels right, you can speak with us—face to face or by phone—about what you would like to do next.

We will support you, whether that’s choosing an urn or jewellery, arranging an interment, or planning a personal memorial, we are here to guide you every step of the way.

Our focus is on providing a calm, personal, and compassionate service—so you always feel supported and never alone.

Why Choose A J Sellman Funeral Directors for a Direct Cremation?

Choosing a direct cremation doesn’t mean choosing a less personal service. At A J Sellman Funeral Directors, we combine simplicity with genuine care, local knowledge, and the reassurance of face-to-face support.

A truly local, personal service

We are an independent, family-run funeral director, which means you can speak to us face to face, not through a call centre. We’re here to listen, guide, and support you in person whenever you need us.

Keeping your loved one close to home

Unlike some online providers, we care for your loved one locally at all times, offering reassurance and continuity throughout the arrangements.

Time to say goodbye

Visits to our Chapel of Rest can be arranged on request, giving you the opportunity for a quiet, personal farewell. A fee of £250 applies.

Local cremation you can trust

Cremations take place at nearby crematoria, including Cannock Chase and Mercia Forest, ensuring everything remains close and familiar.

Care in every detail

Even with a direct cremation, we take the time to play music and say words of committal. Every person is treated with the utmost respect and care.

Flexible and personal choices

You can personalise elements of the cremation, including selecting music, requesting a livestream, and receiving regular updates from our team.

The option to attend

If you wish, you can be present at the crematorium to see us arrive. Although you cannot enter the chapel, this offers flexibility that many larger providers do not.

A dignified journey

All funerals are carried out using a hearse, whether attended or unattended, because we believe dignity should never be compromised.

Ashes returned promptly

Cremated remains are usually returned to our care within a few days. We can also guide you through options such as interment, memorial plaques, urns, jewellery, and more.

Support beyond the funeral

We offer ongoing bereavement support through our trusted partner, When Life Changes, so you’re never alone after the funeral has taken place.

A place to remember

You are always welcome to visit our Book of Remembrance, a lasting tribute to reflect, remember, and honour your loved one.

We are here to support you every step of the way when it matters most.

Is Direct Cremation Right for You?

Direct cremation can be a simple, dignified and affordable choice, but every family is different. Here are some helpful points to consider.

Advantages of a Direct Cremation

  • A more affordable option
Direct cremation is typically the most cost-effective type of funeral, providing a simple and dignified choice without the additional costs of a traditional service.
  • Less to organise at a difficult time
With fewer decisions to make immediately, families often find there is less pressure and stress during an already emotional period.
  • Can take place sooner
Because there is no formal ceremony to arrange beforehand, the cremation can often be carried out more quickly than a traditional funeral.
  • Simple and straightforward arrangements
The process is clear and uncomplicated, which can be reassuring when everything else feels overwhelming.
  • Personalised memorial options later
Families can still create a meaningful tribute afterwards, such as a celebration of life, memorial service, or informal gathering.
  • Keeps focus on what matters most
Many people choose direct cremation to allow the emphasis to remain on remembrance, without the formal structure of a traditional service.
  • Flexible financial planning
The lower cost can provide more control over spending, allowing families to allocate resources towards a later memorial or other meaningful tributes.

Disadvantages of a Direct Cremation

  • May not suit everyone’s wishes
Some family members and friends may prefer a traditional funeral where they can gather and say goodbye at the time of the cremation.
  • Usually unattended at the crematorium
As there is typically no attendance, some people may feel this offers less immediate opportunity for closure.
  • No formal service on the day
There is no structured funeral ceremony unless arranged separately at a later date.
  • Can influence the grieving process
Everyone grieves differently, and for some individuals, the absence of a traditional service may affect how they process their loss.
At A J Sellman Funeral Directors, Ed, Ralph and the team are always here to support you face to face, helping you understand your options and choose what feels right for you and your family.

Direct Cremation – Frequently Asked Questions

What is a direct cremation?

A direct cremation is a simple, unattended cremation without a formal funeral service beforehand. It focuses on the essential arrangements, giving families the freedom to hold a personal memorial or celebration of life at a later time, in a way that feels right for them.

Is a direct cremation the right choice for everyone?

There’s no single “right” way to say goodbye. A direct cremation can suit those who prefer simplicity and lower costs. Ed, Ralph and the team are always here to talk things through and help you decide what feels most appropriate face to face for a personal, supportive conversation.

Will the cremation take place locally?

Yes. With A J Sellman Funeral Directors, the cremation takes place locally, offering reassurance that your loved one remains close to home and within the care of a trusted local team throughout.

Can we still have a service or memorial?

Yes. Many families choose to arrange a memorial service, celebration of life, or gathering at a later date. This gives you the time and space to create something personal and meaningful, without the time pressures of a traditional funeral.

Can we add any personal elements to a direct cremation?

Absolutely. While direct cremation is designed to be simple, there is flexibility to include personal touches if you wish. For example, you may choose to spend time in the chapel of rest, say a private goodbye, or include small meaningful elements before the cremation takes place. These choices can all be discussed in person, so you feel comfortable and fully supported.

Will we be able to choose a date and time for the cremation?

With a direct cremation, the cremation takes place at a time arranged by us.

Can family attend the cremation?

Direct cremation is typically unattended, which helps keep things simple and cost-effective. We will inform you when it will take place so you can see us arrive. However, you cannot attend the service. If you would prefer a service or attendance, Ed, Ralph and the team can talk you through alternative options over the phone or in a face-to-face meeting, whichever you prefer.

What happens after the cremation?

After the cremation, the ashes are returned into our care. You can then decide what feels right—whether that’s keeping them, scattering them, having some jewellery or arranging an interment.

Is direct cremation more affordable?

Yes, direct cremation is generally a more cost-effective option because it does not include a formal service, procession, or additional elements, while still providing a dignified and respectful farewell.

Will my loved one be treated with care and respect?

Always. At A J Sellman Funeral Directors, every person is cared for with the utmost dignity, respect, and compassion, regardless of the type of service chosen.

How do we arrange a direct cremation?

You can contact Ed, Ralph and the team directly, and they will guide you step by step. If you prefer, you can sit down with them face to face, ask questions, and talk things through at your own pace. Their aim is to make sure you feel supported, informed, and never alone in making these decisions.
